Pre Season Preview by Robert Del Giorno
MURFREESBORO, AR- The Murfreesboro Rattlers
football team under the tutelage of head coach Jay Turley who
has a career record of 23-12 going into his fourth year at the
helm of the Rattlers are coming off a 5-6 record last year and
they’re making changes this year with hopes of finishing
higher in the Conference 7-2A standings so they can get a
better seating in the Arkansas high school football playoffs.
“First thing that we have to do is win the conference so we
can have some home field advantage through the playoffs,” Jay
Turley, Murfreesboro Rattlers head coach said. “It’s tough to
travel in the playoffs, especially that second week when you
have to go to Junction City or Bearden where we’ve seemed to
have gone the last couple of years. That’s a tough draw.”
The
Rattlers run a spread offense and a 3-3 defense and coach
Turley said that right now there team’s strength is the
Rattlers defense.
“I’m going to say defense is our strength right now. Our
offense still has a lot of young guys or inexperienced in some
places,” Turley said. “We’ve moved them around and we have
them playing in different places and it will take us time to
catch up in that area.”
One
of the changes that the Rattlers have made is that they moved
senior Tyler McRae from receiver to quarterback.
“The quarterback last year (Garrett Gills) really didn’t like
playing quarterback and if you don’t like playing quarterback;
you’re not going to be effective. Garrett (Gills) is a better
receiver for us,” Coach Turley said. “Tyler is real smart and
he’s a pitcher in baseball so we said hay; let’s teach him how
to throw a football and let him control the game for us.”
Saying that McRae is smart is an understatement, he had a 30
on the ACT and he has a 4.0 GPA.
Gills who is a senior (6-0, 190) will be a good target
for McRae because he has 4.6 speed and in 4-games at wide
receiver last year he racked up 381 yards and 6-touchdowns.
Besides McRae and Gills, Coach Turley said that another player
to watch on the Rattlers offense is senior fullback Cory
Fugitt. Fugitt (6-0, 200) won the 100 and 200 meter sprints at
the conference track meet and he has size, speed and strength.
Even though the Rattlers run the spread offence, they still
like to run the football more than they like to pass.
“We
run mostly,” Turley said. “We will run and play action pass a
lot.”
On
defense the Rattlers 3-3 defense is diversified and coach
Turley like they way you can bring the outside linebackers in
when you want to bring more players on the line.
“The 3-3 is pretty versatile and se can get down to a 5-3 real
easy when we’re in it (the 3-3) by moving the outside
linebackers in. It’s something that we like and we get a
lot of kids moving around and it seems to work well for us,”
Coach Turley said.
On
defense Coach Turley said the players to watch on defense are
senior linebackers Drew Cox (5-7, 190) and Gills.
The
Rattlers open their season September 4th against
Gurdon at home.
